Love & Innocence

Mystic River has many twist and turns throughout the entire movie, however, through it all Brendan Harris remains innocent. In the beginning of the movie one may think Brendan Harris is a bit suspicious ,however, contrary to belief he is one of the only characters that remains innocent through out the scenes. All Brendan really wants during the movie was to be the classic teenager and fall in love with Katie Markum and live happily ever after. "I loved her so much. I'm never gonna feel that again. It doesn't happen twice.”-Brendan Harris
Brendan loves Katie so much to the point where he was extremely close to severely injuring his brother. Brendan's character is overall innocent in the aspect of love. The entire love story is so innocent between Katie and Brendan and remains that way until her fatal death.

One of the most influential characters that is deserving of genuine forgiveness would be Dave.  Dave has a rough life throughout the movie. Beginning with his childhood and continuing to his death he is struggling to maintain his hope. Dave suffers with PTSD which makes him on edge/ haunts him the entire movie. “I went fuckin' nuts on him, baby. I went off! I bashed his head on the parking lot. There was blood everywhere, and I might 'a' killed him!” During the movie, Dave insist to his wife that he has killed a man. During the same night Katie was killed which makes both the wife and Jimmy suspicious. After Jimmy kills Dave in a extremely painful way he realizes a few hours later that Dave was not his daughters killer, nonetheless the killer of a sexual predator who rightfully deserved it. Although it is already said and done Dave did not deserve to die that night and should be granted every ounce of forgiveness for being falsely accused for a crime he did not commit.

  1. I absolutely agree that Dave deserves forgiveness. He has murdered people, but his mental state must be considered when judging him. He cannot be judged as any other person, driven to murder by foolishness. He has a real mental illness that pardons his sins.

  2. Brendan seems to be the most innocent character in the whole film, which may correlate with the fact that he hasn't lost his innocence yet. He is very much young and in love with Katie, and is ready to finish out his youth, and enter adulthood with her. Unfortunately he enters adulthood by losing her to the hands of his brother.
